Increase in Prices of Rice Results To Higher Cost of “Lugaw”
INCREASE IN PRICES OF RICE – Some “lugawan” or sellers of glutinous rice dish or porridge in Metro Manila are now affected by it.
Nowadays, several households in the Philippines are experiencing a tight budget due to the high costs of basic goods and commodities in the country. The prices of flour, sugar, and oil which are among the most-used products have increased.
The struggle caused by the high costs of flour and sugar in the country is apart from the challenge brought by the increased prices of fuel. Several oil price hikes since January 2022 have collectively brought the prices of diesel and gasoline to go past P90 per liter.
Meanwhile, the recent rollbacks have pulled the prices of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene quite lower now. However, another challenge now is the increase in the prices of rice.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, several “lugawan” or sellers of glutinous rice dish or porridge in Metro Manila are affected by the increase in the prices of rice in the country. Business owners have different approaches to dealing with the increased cost of rice.
According to the report, one of the business owners who has a “lugawan” in Quezon City is Zaldy Pacaldo. Every day, he purchases four (4) kilos of rice and mixes it with glutinous rice to make porridge and sell it. Previously, the rice he buys was sold at P40 per kilo but it is now at P45 per kilo.
Due to the increase in the prices of rice, Zaldy has decided to increase the cost of the plain lugaw he sells by P2. Another “lugawan” vendor, Marianne Lalu, has a different approach to selling her product amid the higher costs of rice.
Marianne is using 20 kilos of ordinary rice daily. She decided to retain the price of “lugaw” she sells considering the situations of some people now. She stressed that the prices of several goods and commodities have increased and some people’s salaries do not fit their needs. She also expressed that some individuals have no work.
Aside from rice, the prices of gasul, eggs, oil, and meat which are all vital in making “lugaw” also increased. You may visit – Price of Egg May Increase Up To P15 Each in the Next Days, Agri Group Warns.
