Guide on Holiday Pay Rules in the Philippines for Employees

In a year, there are several holidays. These include regular holidays and special non-working days. In the case of government workers, state offices stop operation during regular holidays and special non-working days. In the private sector, the situation may vary among companies.
There are companies and firms that cancel operation depending on the types of holiday while there are also those that continue their operation. In both cases, the employees are entitled for an extra pay depending on the situation.
During regular holidays, employees of the public and private sector are entitled to a 100% of their basic daily salary. In the case of the employees of the government or the public sector which cancel work operation, the employees receive an equivalent of their basic daily salary although they did not report to duty on the said day.
In the case of employees working in the private sector, there are three (3) possible situations and there are holiday pay rules in the Philippines for each. Here’s what may happen:
- No work on a holiday – The worker will still receive 100% holiday pay or shall be paid his or her daily salary even without reporting to work on the said day.
- Work on a holiday – The employee will get 100% pay or his or her basic daily salary rate on top of her wage on the said holiday that he/she reported to work.
- Work on a double holiday – In case there are two (2) holidays falling on the same day, under the Labor Law, the worker who reports to duty is entitled for a 200% of his/her basic daily salary rate on top of his/her wage on the said day that the worker reported to duty.
The holiday pay rules in the Philippines is constantly effective. In a year, there are several regular holidays in the country. Most of them are in commemoration of significant events in the past or remembering the lives of people who played a significant role in the country’s history. Here are the regular holidays in the Philippines this 2023:

In the case of special non-working days, employees who report to work on the said day is entitled for an extra pay that is equivalent to 30% of the daily salary rate of the worker who reported to duty. Here are the special non-working days in the Philippines:
