Study about Mental Health Identified Money Problems as Reason Behind
MONEY PROBLEMS – A study found that one of the top causes of mental health issues is financial problems amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic dragged the economy of several nations down. This challenging situation is going on for more than two (2) years now and it shut down several businesses, big and small, across the globe.
In the Philippines, many businesses were not able to cope with the pandemic. The national government has to implement quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Amid the restrictions, there are limitations on the operations of the businesses.
Many businesses incurred only expenses with no income for several months which forced them to either temporarily or permanently shut down. Amid the closure of businesses, a lot of employees lost their jobs or their only source of income, too.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Manulife Philippines conducted a study about mental health issues. One of the top causes identified is financial problems. The mental health issue went past other health problems with regards to the concerns of the respondents.
Manulife PH’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer Melissa Henson said that 69% of the respondents believe that the pandemic lasted way too long. A total of 97% of the respondents are experiencing endemic-related fear. Four (4) out of five (5) Filipinos have savings that can only last less than a year.
In 2020, with regards to the top illnesses that concerned the respondents, the results listed heart disease, cancer, COVID-19 infection, and stroke. The latest survey conducted in November yielded results with cancer, depression, stroke, and anxiety as the top health concerns.
Aside from finding that money problems cause mental health issues amid the pandemic, the study also found that the respondents are worried that it might take long before the economy can recover.
