The Filipinos are among the people that are scattered across the globe. Many of these Pinoys are working abroad in the pursuit of supporting their families. Most of them are parents who have children and siblings to send to school, utility bills to pay, dreams to fulfill, and a lot more.
While the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) work hard for their families, there are also entities that were designed to help ensure their welfare and situation wherever they are. One of these entities is the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration or more popularly called OWWA.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration or OWWA is in the serving of countless OFWs for decades now. It provides different types of assistance for Filipinos working abroad as well as benefit offers.
The OWWA wants to make sure that their OFW members get a decent burial in an instance of death without the worries about the people they left behind. The state entity has the OWWA Death Benefits offer which has its own set of requirements.
Aside from the Death Benefits, the Overseas Workers WIelfare Administration also has the Burial Gratuity. It is in addition to the death benefit. According to the state entity, under this, the beneficiaries or survivors of the deceased OFW may get Php 20,000 as burial assistance.
The OWWA Burial Assistance has its own set of requirements for claim. It is open or the qualified dependents of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) member of the OWWA.
The requirements in availing the OWWA Burial Assistance also includes specific documents that must be prepared and submitted to the state entity. Here are the documents required in applying for the benefit offer:
- OFW Membership Record (MR) — you can get it from OWWA RWO
- copy of Passport or Seaman’s Identification Record Book (SIRB) of the OFW – Member — you can get it from MARINA
- two (2) Valid IDs and One (1) copy of ID Picture of claimant (1×1)
- Death Certificate (local o foreign; police / accident report – if death was caused by accident) — you can get it from Philippine Statistics Authority or Local Civil Registrar
- Burial Permit and Official Receipt of payment in funeral — you can get it from City / Municipal LGU
- Affidavit of Undertaking executed by claimant — you can get it from Notary Public
- Proof of Relationship to OFW Member — you can get it from Philippine Statistics Authority or Local Civil Registrar
- OFW CENOMAR, if single
- Marriage Certificate
- Birth Certificate of OFW, if the claimant is the parent
- Birth Certificate of the claimant and death certificate of deceased spouse, for OFWs child
To apply for the benefit offer, go to the OWWA Regional Welfare Office that covers the permanent address of the OFW. At the OWWA office, queue in the line or get a number. Upon your turn, present your OFW I.D. or info to the Membership Verification Desk. Submit accomplished claim form and required documents. Once the application has been approved, proceed to present claim stub and claim financial assistance through check or cash pay-out.
