Countless Filipinos are working abroad to give their families a brighter future and a more comfortable life. Back in the Philippines, one of the state entities that ensures their welfare is the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration or more popularly called OWWA.

The OWWA is in the service of the Filipino people for decades now. It is the state entity that facilitates the needs of countless Pinoys working abroad most especially in times of emergency.

The OWWA also provides several kinds of benefit offers for the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families. One of these is the Death Benefit which is “ansurance benefit to survivors of deceased OFWs who were active OWWA members at the time of death”.

How much the survivors of a deceased OFW may get as OWWA death benefits? According to the state entity, the family may get Php 100,000.00 for deaths due to natural causes and Php 200,000.00 for accidental death.

There are OWWA Death Benefits requirements for application. The Death Benefit is open for the qualified dependents of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) member of the OWWA.

Aside from the qualification, there are also documents that are part of the OWWA Death Benefits requirements that must be prepared and submitted to the nearest branch of the government office.

For the documents needed, here are the OWWA Death Benefits requirements that the survivors of a deceased OFW who wish to file a claim must prepare and submit:

  • OFW Membership Record (MR) — you can get it from OWWA RWO
  • copy of Passport or Seaman’s Identification Record Book (SIRB) of the OFW – Member — you can get it from MARINA
  • two (2) Valid IDs and One (1) copy of ID Picture of claimant (1×1)
  • Death Certificate (local o foreign; police / accident report – if death was caused by accident) — you can get it from Philippine Statistics Authority or Local Civil Registrar
  • Burial Permit and Official Receipt of payment in funeral — you can get it from City / Municipal LGU
  • Affidavit of Undertaking executed by claimant — you can get it from Notary Public
  • Proof of Relationship to OFW Member — you can get it from Philippine Statistics Authority or Local Civil Registrar
    • OFW CENOMAR, if single
    • Marriage Certificate
    • Birth Certificate of OFW, if the claimant is the parent
    • Birth Certificate of the claimant and death certificate of deceased spouse, for OFWs child

To file for a benefit claim, you need to visit the OWWA Regional Welfare Office that covers the permanent address of the OFW, get queuing number, present OFW I.D. or info to the Membership Verification Desk, and submit the OWWA Death Benefits requirements for validation and evaluation.

For approved applications, proceed to present claim stub and claim financial assistance through check or cash pay-out.
