In the Philippines, one of the biggest government entities is the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration or more popularly called OWWA. It was created to ensure the welfare of the Filipinos who are working abroad.
Truth be told that there is a huge population of overseas Filipino workers across the globe. These OFWs took the risks to be away from their families in the hope of a comfortable life and a brighter future for themselves and their families.
Undeniably, the bigger compensation in most cases abroad attract the OFWs to get through the longing and all the odds of being away from their loved ones just so they can provide the needs of their families. Thus, the OFWs are considered heroes of the nation. They also bring in money to the country.
To also ensure the welfare of these OFWs who faced all the risks to ensure the welfare of their loved ones, the Philippine government crafted the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. More popularly called OWWA, it has several benefit offers for all the registered Pinoy workers abroad.
Aside from the OWWA Disability Benefit which comes with a different set of requirements, the government entity also has the OWWA Medical Assistance — the Supplemental Medical Assistance for OFWs or the MEDplus.
According to the government agency, the MEDplus “is designed to provide supplemental medical relief for active OWWA and PhilHealth member-OFWs who are afflicted with dreaded diseases and were hospitalized”.
OFWs who got diseases at the job sites or while in the Philippines may avail the benefits of the MEDplus. The government entity observes a case rate system with regards to how much they will extend to the affected OFW.
To avail the benefit offer, there is a list of OWWA Medical Assistance requirements that the OFW must submit to the nearest branch of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

- OFW Membership Record (MR) — you may get it from OWWA RWO
- MEDPlus Application Form — you may get it from OWWA RWO
- one (1) Copy of Passport Size Picture — you may get it from OFW Member or Claimant
- valid Passport — you may get it from DFA
- valid Identification (I.D) Card — you may get it from Government or Company issued
- Member Data Record from PhilHealth — you may get it from PhilHealth
- Medical Certificate — you may get it from competent medical practitioner from legitimate medical institution/facility
According to OWWA, in case the assistance will be claimed by a family member of the OFW since the OFW is in abroad at the time of the release, the OWWA Medical Assistance requirements will include a duly-notarized Special Power of Attorney executed by the OFW.
In case of the death of the OFW and the family will claim the assistance, the claimant must present a Death certificate of deceased OFW / marriage certificate or birth certificate of NOK-claimant issued by Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
