Every year, there are several holidays in the Philippines. Undeniably, these are among the days that countless Filipinos await aside from the days when they celebrate personal occasions. There are several kinds of holidays in the country.

Every year, there are several regular holidays and special non-working days in the Philippines. During regular holidays, classes in all levels in schools are cancelled. Work in both public and private sectors are also cancelled.

One of the regular holidays in the Philippines is the Labor Day which is celebrated every first day of May. For the Labor Day Holiday Pay in the Philippines, usually, days before the said holiday, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) issues guidelines for the employers and the employees.

Recently, DOLE once again released guidelines on the Labor Day holiday pay in the Philippines as March 1 draws near. The employees may have either a well-earned day of rest or an extra pay for reporting to work on a holiday.

If the employee chose not to report to work on March 1, he/she will not incur a deduction from his/her salary. In another way, the employee will still be paid with an amount that is equal to 100% of his/her basic daily salary.

On the other side, if the employee reports to work on March 1, he/she is entitled to a Labor Day holiday pay which are as follows:

  • 200% of the daily wage for the first eight hours
  • an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate for overtime work beyond eight (8) hours

According to the Department of Labor and Employment, in case the regular holiday is also the rest day of the employee, he/she is entitled to an extra 30% of the 200% holiday pay. In case the employee works overtime while March 1 is also his/her rest day, he/she is entitled to an additional 30% of the hourly rate on top of the rest day holiday pay.
