Facebook, Google, Twitter Companies Warn Hong Kong Government
FACEBOOK – Together with Google and Twitter companies, the tech giant warned Hong Kong that it may stop offering its services.
Undeniably, technology takes a huge part in the people’s lives nowadays. A big part of the populace got social media accounts and several online platforms also play a huge role in education, business, entertainment, investment, and other fields. Thus, most people got accounts in platforms like Facebook, Google. and Twitter.
Many people use these social media accounts not only for personal purposes but as well as for businesses and other productive reasons. They connect people across miles allowing education to take place even at a distance, a business deal to be approved across the miles, a connection with people in other countries, etc.
However, currently, there seems to be a possibility that the people in Hong Kong may not be allowed to utilized the services of three (3) of the biggest online platforms soon – Facebook, Twitter, and Google. The companies behind these online platforms warned the Hong Kong government that it might stop offering services.
Based on Wall Street Journal, the warning of Facebook, Google, and Twitter came after data protection laws being pushed by the authorities. Such laws may impose penalties or make tech companies liable over the sharing of a person’s personal information online.
Reportedly, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau in Hong Kong proposed amendments to the data protection laws in the city in May to prevent doxing – it is an act of revealing a person’s real name, residential address or workplace address, telephone numbers, and other personal information without his or her permission.
Reuters reportedly asked the three (3) United States tech giants for their comment but they have yet to respond. More updates may be posted soon.
