Update on Electric Cooperatives Loss due to Odette Damages
Electric Cooperatives in Visayas, Mindanao, and MIMAROPA lost a huge amount to the damages caused by Typhoon Odette.
Typhoon Odette brought heavy rains and strong winds leaving several areas in the Philippines devastated. It is one of the strongest typhoons to have hit the country – lives were lost and there were massive damages to properties and infrastructures.
The country has undeniably prepared for Typhoon Odette. The forecasts urged massive preparations that include preemptive evacuations in areas that usually experience flood when there are heavy rains. Many people living near coastal waters were also advised to evacuate prior to the entry of the typhoon to the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
However, Typhoon Odette visibly has its own strength. The calamity left a lot of families homeless after its onslaught.
Many people lost their homes to the onslaught of the typhoon. Some houses were flushed away by flood while others were damaged by the strong winds. Some houses were destroyed by the falling trees. Deaths were recorded in several areas.
Some communication and electric lines were also down amid the onslaught of Typhoon Odette. Several posts broke to the strong winds. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, electric cooperatives incurred huge losses due to the damages caused by the typhoon.
According to the report, the electric cooperatives in Visayas, Mindanao, and MIMAROPA spent at least P300 million on the damages caused by Typhoon Odette. The National Electrification Administration (NEA) said that the amount excludes the other areas where communication lines have yet to be restored.
Several areas in the country still have no power and some of the lines are set to be repaired by December 25, 2021 while other residents in some areas will have to wait until next year due to the severity of the damage.
