Bello Speaks on Cash for Work Program for Informal Workers
CASH FOR WORK PROGRAM – Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III spoke on the options that employees who lost their jobs amid the implementation of the Alert Level 3 in Metro Manila may turn to.
The increase in the COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila urged the authorities to place the capital region under Alert Level 3. The move is also amid the threats of the Omicron, a “heavily mutated” variant of COVID-19 that was first recorded in South Africa.
Currently, there are four (4) cases of Omicron in the Philippines. These cases are from travelers abroad. The patients are now in isolation.
Prior to the holiday rush, there were already speculations that the COVID-19 cases in the country will spike once again as people will go out in preparation for the holidays. An increase in the cases was recorded in several cities across the nation.
The implementation of the Alert Level 3 is eyed to have big effects most especially in the economy of the country. Many Filipinos may also temporarily lose their job due to the restrictions. Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) assured that assistance will be extended to the workers.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III expressed that there is a “Cash for Work Program” that can offer emergency employment to some workers who lost their source of income.
According to the report, Bello expressed that around 40,000 informal workers may benefit from the “Cash for Work Program” of the government. As of this writing, there are still no further details yet regarding this assistance to employees who lost their jobs due to the implementation of Alert Level 3 but rest assured that updates will be posted as soon as there is further information.
The whole Metro Manila is under Alert Level 3 until January 15, 2022. Curfew is up again in several cities.
