DOLE Receives Petitions Seeking Minimum Wage Increase by P213

DOLE – The Department of Labor and Employment spoke on the petitions seeking an increase in the minimum wage of workers.

Many Filipinos are financially struggling now due to the impacts of the pandemic and the series of oil price hikes in the country. It was more than two (2) years ago when the pandemic started and a lot of people lost their jobs amid the crisis.

In some cases, they lost a part of their income. Some companies had to adapt alternative work systems to stay afloat amid the crisis or as part of compliance with the restrictions. Many workers cannot have their salary in full, too.

Since January, the price of oil products took an upward trend. The series of oil price hikes affected a lot of people most especially the public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and fishermen and farmers who use oil-operated equipment.

Amid the financial challenges that many people are dealing with, there are calls for an increase in the minimum wage of workers. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, petitions seeking an increase in the minimum wage were filed at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

According to the report, three (3) petitioners are asking for an increase in the minimum wage by P213.00. DOLE has passed a board resolution and will be having a consultation and a public hearing regarding the proposal.

Sarah Buena-Mirasol, the regional director of DOLE in the National Capital Region (NCR), said that the wage board targets to decide on the petition this May and deliberation of the petition will follow it. The hearing will be open to the public as well as to the different sectors.

Prior to the said petition, a petition seeking a P430 increase on the minimum daily salary in Metro Manila was filed by the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) but it was junked by the Regional Tripartite Productivity and Wages Board (RTPWB-7) saying it has no jurisdiction over the matter.
