Not many people but even the unemployed individuals may apply for a Tax Identification Number or more popularly called TIN. It is usually sought by individuals with income and it certifies that the person or groups is a taxpayer in the Philippines.
The Tax Identification Number or TIN is issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue or more popularly called BIR. It is the tax-collecting body in the Philippines. It is usually required in applying for a loan, starting a business, purchasing a house, etc.
The Bureau of Internal Revenue issues a Tax Identification Number which contains a unique set of numbers and it is open for application for the following:
- anyone who earns an income in the Philippines (Filipinos and foreign nationals)
- self-employed Filipino and foreign individuals including:

- local and foreign estates in the Philippines
- Filipino-owned and foreign-owned corporate tax payers in the Philippines
- persons registering under EO 98 to be able to transact with other government offices
- one-time taxpayers including the individuals who will be paying any of the following:
- capital gains tax
- donor’s tax
- estate tax
- tax on winnings
However, what may surprise a lot of people is that even unemployed individuals may apply for the Tax Identification Number. - valid ID issued by the government in the Philippines
- Marriage Certificate (for married women)
- proof of employment:
- For overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) — Employment Contract
- For foreign nationals not engaged in business or trade — Passport
