P20 PER KILO RICE – Economists and people who are in the rice industry including the sellers spoke about the possibility of selling rice for P20/kilo.

The local and national Elections 2022 in the Philippines gathered a lot of promises and desires of the presidential candidates regarding what they want for the country and the Filipino people. Ten people vied for the presidency in this year’s election.

It was an automated election. Shortly after voting precincts closed, the partial and unofficial results were made available. Partido Federal ng Pilipinas and former Senator Bongbong Marcos is leading the presidential race.

Marcos Jr.’s camp has already announced victory after 98% of the votes has been canvassed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the former Senator takes a 16 million lead. However, a question also crossed the surface – is P20 per kilo rice possible? Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, economist and Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda expressed that it is really impossible unless if there will be no tax and the country would import rice from Vietnam. However, Salceda stressed that such move will put the 3.14 million farmers in the country in a bad situation.

Philcongrains Chairman Joji Co is clueless on how the next administration will work it to out to drag the prices of rice to P20/kilo. According to him, a subsidy may be provided but it has to be specific and the rice will only be sold to the poorest of the poor.

Based on the report, even the people in the agriculture industry and the sellers of rice really find the “P20 per kilo rice” impossible. One rice seller stressed that it will not be beneficial on the part of the farmers. Currently, the prices of rice range between Php 36.00 to Php 52.00 per kilo.
