Update on Vegetable Price amid High Oil Costs

VEGETABLE PRICES – The prices of some vegetables in Metro Manila public markets increased following another oil price hike.

Many Filipinos are greatly affected by the high prices of oil products now. The series of oil price hikes that started in January has brought the prices of fuel to over P90 per liter for diesel and gasoline now. Today, another oil price hike was implemented.

Drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) called for the suspension of the fuel excise tax. Private individuals are also affected by the high fuel costs. However, according to Malacañang, the fuel excise tax cannot be suspended since the budget has already been allocated to several government projects.

Several transport groups are calling for an increase in minimum fare in jeepneys amid the high costs of fuel now. The prices of basic goods and commodities have previously increased, too.

Vegetable Prices

Following the oil price hike and amid the high costs of fuel now, vegetable prices in Metro Manila public markets have also increased. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, in Libertad Public Market, from P80 per kilo, the price of cauliflower jumped to P150 per kilo.

The prices of local onions also increased to P85 per kilo and imported onions to P90 per kilo. Based on the report, from P50 per kilo, the price of potato also rose to P70 per kilo while spinach or kangkong is now sold at P90 per kilo from P70 per kilo.

Aside from those high vegetable prices, the price of chili pepper also grew from between P70 to P80 per kilo to up to P160 per kilo. Based on the report, the higher costs of transporting the vegetables are among the reasons behind the increase in the prices. Furthermore, there are also fewer harvests of veggies thus they are pricy on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
