Universal Robina Corp. said that it has paid a P100,000.00 fine to DOLE for the death of one of its third-party workers.
In every country, businesses are obliged to abide by the rules set by the state and the government in operating. There are requirements not just in starting a business but as well as in using certain equipment for business operations.
Both small and big businesses have to abide by the regulations. Otherwise, penalties and fines may be imposed on them. Cease and Desist Order may be issued to a business on a case-to-case basis. There are also government bodies that protect the rights of the workers.
In the Philippines, one of the government bodies that protect the rights of the workers is the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Recently, it reportedly fined one of the company giants in the country due to the death of its worker.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, DOLE fined Universal Robina Corp. following a worker’s death in its plant in Cebu. The amount of fine is P100,000 after the worker died operating a machine in question.
According to the report, Universal Robina confirmed to the stock exchange that one of its third-party workers died due to an incident in the workplace. The giant company also confirmed paying P100,000 as a fine after DOLE issued a Cease and Desist Order to the company for operating the machine pending the submission of the requirements.
According to URC, they have paid the penalty and have already submitted the requirements to DOLE. Citing Sunstar Cebu as the source, the worker was reportedly cleaning a pulverizing machine when it accidentally turned on while he was still inside the equipment which led to his death.
URC is the company behind several prominent food products in the Philippines including Jack N’ Jill products, Nissin Cup Noodles, and Vitasoy.
