BSP Gives Statement on New Design for P1000 Bill
BSP – Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas spoke on the design of the new P1,000.00 banknote amid the criticisms on the bill design.
In the Philippines, the body that facilitates the designs of the banknotes and coins is Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas or the Central Bank of the Philippines. Usually, it takes years for a certain design to be on the banknote before the Central Bank would decide to make some changes.
Banknotes are one of the things that circulate among the hands of many people daily thus crumples and cuts cannot be avoided. Usually, before implementing a new design on the banknotes, the people get an initial glimpse of the new design and it hooks different reactions from the people.
Recently, a new design for the P1000 bill crossed the surface. It gained different reactions from the people.
In the new design for the P1000 banknote, the images of the World War 2 heroes Vicente Lim, Josefa Llanes Escoda, and Jose Abad Santos were removed. Instead, it is changed to a Philippine eagle. Some people like the new designs but others do not support removing the heroes in exchange for the eagle.
Furthermore, some individuals complained about the errors on the new P1000 banknote. To this, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reacted.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, some netizens lamented the errors in the spelling and the formatting of the characters of the name scientific name of the eagle. The correct name of the eagle is Pithercophaga jefferyi and the name must be italicized.
In the new design for the P1000 banknote, the name of the eagle is printed as Pithercophaga jefforyi. According to BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno, the photo of the new design for the P1000 banknote which circulates online is just a “sample” that was sent to the Central Bank for review.
Diokno assured that the needed corrections have already been made. More updates may be posted soon.
