Employees Who Contracted COVID-19 May Turn to SSS for Financial Benefits
EMPLOYEES WHO CONTRACTED COVID-19 – The workers who were infected by COVID-19 may claim benefits from the Social Security System (SSS).
The authorities continue to urge the public to stay at home as much as possible. There are still threats of the COVID-19 disease in the Philippines and the fight has yet to be won.
The total COVID-19 cases recorded in the Philippines has surpassed 1.2 million. The whole nation is still under community quarantine measures now. This pandemic has greatly affected the lives of the people.
Several companies and firms opted a flexible set-up for the employees for their safety. They allowed the work-from-home set-up which may be safer for the employees as they are not exposed to a lot of people daily. It also gives way for social distancing for those who will be working in the office.
A lot of people contracted COVID-19 in the line of duty. Based on an article on ABS-CBN News, employees who contracted COVID-19 in the line of their job may claim cash benefits from the Social Security System. More commonly called as SSS, it is a state-run social insurance institution wherein a huge part of the populace is a member of.
Based on the report, the said benefits for employees who contracted COVID-19 from SSS was confirmed by Employees Compensation Commission Executive Director Stella Zipagan-Banawis. The Labor Department previously expressed that COVID-19 is compensable under the Employee Compensation Program.
According to Banawis, the benefits that can be claimed by the employee is the sickness benefit. In case the worker was not able to attend work for several days, he or she can claim of up to Php 450.00 allowance daily.
Based on the report, medical reimbursements are also available for the expenses that are related to the hospitalization. For those who died of COVID-19, the survivors or beneficiaries may claim the death pension or the survivorship pension. The following are needed depending on the case:
- Certificate of employment
- Certificate of RT-PCR result from DOH accredited testing facility
- Medical records if hospitalized
With regards to those who are under a work-from-home set up, it is still compensable provided that it is a work-related injury. The claims are “expedited” thus must be processed within 20 working days.
