Meralco Electricity Rates Set Upward this June

MERALCO – The electricity distributor Manila Electric Company announced an increase in the electricity rates this June 2021.

With regards to the residents in Metro Manila, they rely to Manila Electric Company which holds the franchise for electricity distribution for 22 cities and 89 municipalities including the National Capital Region (NCR).

The Manila Electric Company is more popularly called as Meralco. It is the acronym for the company’s official name before it was changed in 1919 – the Manila Electric Railroad And Light Company.

Meralco undeniably covers a huge area for electricity distribution. Its announcement are important to a lot of households most especially when it comes to the power capacity, power outages, and increases or decreases in rates.

Recently, Meralco announced an increase in the electricity rates this June 2021. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the power distributor is set to implement a P0.08 increase in electricity rate per kilowatt hour.

According to the report, the increase in the rate is due to the increase in the price of the electricity bought in the spot market. It is equivalent to a P16.00 increase on the bills of consumers for every 200 kWh consumed. To check on how much will be the increase in your monthly bill this June, you may refer below:

  • 200 kWh = P16.00
  • 300 kWh = P24.00
  • 400 kWh = P32.00
  • 500 kWh = P40.00

According to the power distributor’s spokesman, Joe Zaldarriaga, the company is able to manage the bilateral contracts because the electricity demands also increased. The price in the spot market is really the reason behind the addition in the electricity rates.

Meanwhile, reportedly, the yellow and red alerts portion in May until the first week of June are not covered by the increase in the electricity rates.
