LTFRB Speaks on Pending Petitions to Increase Fare in Public Transport

Will LTFRB Approve the Petitions Seeking to Increase Fare in Public Transportation?

LTFRB – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board spoke on the pending petitions to increase the fare in public transportation.

A lot of people are greatly affected by the huge increase in pump prices. Public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers are among those who were greatly affected by the series of oil price hikes that started in January. According to several drivers, they can hardly bring home an amount that could provide for the needs of their families.

Some drivers have other sidelines as they try to cope with their household expenses. Several transport groups filed petitions seeking an increase in the minimum fare to mitigate the impacts of the current oil prices.

Previously, the national government released fuel subsidies to PUV drivers to help them amid the high prices of fuel. Fuel vouchers were also released to fisherfolks and farmers who use machinery for their livelihood.

With regards to the petitions seeking an increase on the minimum fare, based on a report on ABS-CBN News, LTFRB said that it is unlikely to be approved under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. The transport groups want to raise the minimum fare from Php 9.00 up to Php 15.00.

According to the report, LTFRB said that the possibility of the petitions being approved may take place if there are no more aid that could be extended to the drivers and the resources have all been exhausted. The decision on the pending petitions has the big possibility of falling on the lap of the incoming administration.

The hearings set for the petitions seeking an increase on the minimum fare amid the high prices of fuel are set on June 28 and 29 – in the last week of the Duterte administration. The 77-year-old President and the current admin’s term are set to end on June 30.
