Transport Groups Seeks Understanding from Public Over Proposed Fare Increase in Jeepney Rides

TRANSPORT GROUPS – Five (5) groups of jeepney drivers have decided to push their petition for fare increase of Php 3.00 amid the crisis now.

One of the primary public transportation in the Philippines is a jeepney ride. Many people go to school or work daily through public commute and the jeepney fare slices a part of their weekly or monthly budget.

In the case of the jeepney drivers, many claim that they financially struggle amid the COVID-19 crisis now. The passenger capacity has to be reduced to pave way for social distancing inside the vehicle. Also, a huge chunk of the populace who used to report to work physically are under a work-from-home scheme now. Public commuters reduced in number.

To ease their financial burdens amid the crisis now, five (5) transport groups have decided to push through with a petition of a jeepney fare increase of Php 3.00.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Liga Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas (LTOP) and four (4) other transport groups are set to file the petition. They seek the understanding of the public.

According to LTOP president Orlando Marquez Jr., they also have heavy hearts over their decision to file the petition but they are already decided to do so. He claimed that they are asking help from the government most especially the Land Transportation and Franchise Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD) for a long time now.

Marquez further stressed that not all of them received the assistance from the DSWD and many of them are struggling now amid the high prices of fuel. According to him, the transport groups have come up with proposals to the government to prevent an increase in the jeepney fare but they allegedly fell on deaf ears.

“Kaya ito po humihingi kami ng pasensya, paumanhin, pag-unawa sa ating mga kababayan, ito na po ang aming napag-usapan naipa-file na namin bukas ang aming kahilingan,” the LTOP President said.

In case the plea of the transport groups would be heard and approved, the minimum jeepney fare would increase from Php 9.00 to Php 12.00. More updates may be posted soon.
