Many Filipinos are members of the Social Security System. More commonly called as SSS, it is one of the biggest social insurance institutions ran by the state together with the Government Service Insurance System or GSIS. The GSIS is for those individuals who are working in the government and the public sector.
The Filipino workers who are under the private sector may apply for membership to SSS. It is also open for self-employed individuals, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), non-working spouse (NWS), and those who want to make voluntary memberships for insurance.
Every month, an SSS member contributes a certain part of his or her salary to SSS. The rate will depend on the wage of the member. Accumulated contributions are the basis of a member’s qualification to the benefits and offers of the social insurance institution.
One of the offers of the Social Insurance Institution is the SSS Sickness Benefit. This year 2021, it has updated its official website with details about the qualification and the requirements in availing the said benefit.
According to SSS, the said benefit may be avail by employed, self-employed, voluntary, OFW, NWS, and members of the social insurance institution who got separated from work. A member may avail it if he or she gets sick and…
- he or she is either confined at a hospital or at home for not less than four (4) days due to sickness or injury
- within the ’12-month period prior to the semester when he or she got sick or injure, the member has made not less than three (3) months of contribution
- he or she informed the SSS about his or her sickness or injury
What are the requirements in availing the SSS Sickness Benefit? As of 2021, here is a list of the documents that you must prepare and submit to a branch of SSS or online:
- Sickness Benefit Application (SBA) Form
- SS ID/UMID card or any valid primary ID cards/documents
- Supporting medical documents for prolonged confinement/sickness
