A valid driver’s license issued by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is required in driving in the Philippines – otherwise, you will be fined. The government agency is the one tasked to issue a driver’s license to qualified individuals and as well as record vehicle registrations. There is also a corresponding penalty for drivers who will be caught driving an unregistered vehicle.
The LTO issues three (3) types of licenses – the Student Permit, the Non-Professional Driver’s License, and the Professional Driver’s License. The Student Permit is the first step before you can apply for a non-pro and a pro driver’s license.
The Student Permit is valid for one (1) year but, after a month, you may already apply for a non-pro license provided that you have no violation or it was not confiscated.
If you want to drive private vehicles only, you may apply for the non-professional driver’s license. If you will be driving public utility vehicles (PUVs) like bus, jeepney, tricycle, cabs, or taxi, you need to apply for a professional driver’s license.
