In the Philippines, members of the Social Security System may turn to the state-run social insurance agency in times of disability. The coverage include both partial and total disabilities.

Through the SSS Disability Benefit offer, the Social Security System wants to help its members in times of disability. It is one of the many SSS benefits and SSS loans that were crafted as safety nets of members in times of sickness, unemployment, maternity, etc.

What are the disabilities covered under the benefit offer? As mentioned, the Disability Benefit offer of the Social Security System covers both partial and total disabilities including the following:

Partial Disabilities

  • one finger
  • one hand
  • one arm
  • one foot
  • one leg
  • both ears
  • hearing of one ear or both ears
  • one eyesight

Total Disabilities

  • complete loss of sight of both eyes
  • loss of two limbs at or above the wrists or ankles
  • permanent complete paralysis of two limbs
  • brain injury that leads to incurable imbecility or insanity
  • other cases of total disability approved by the SSS

Under the benefit offer, disabled members whose monthly contributions prior to the semester of the disability did not reach 36 total monthly contributions may qualify to the SSS Disabilty Benefit lump sum. How much will a disabled member get?

With regards to the SSS Disability Benefit lump sum, the amount depends if it is a partial disability or a total disability. In the case of partial disabilities, whichever of the following formula will yield a higher amount:

  • Monthly pension x 12 x Percentage of disability
  • Monthly disability pension x Number of SSS monthly contribution payments x Percentage of disability in relation to the whole body

For members with a total disability, whichever of the following formula will yield a higher amount will be used in the computation for the SSS lump sum:

  • Monthly disability pension x Number of SSS monthly contribution payments
  • Monthly pension x 12

The money will be released through any of the 25 banks accredited to the SSS including the following banks:

  • Asia United Bank (AUB)
  • China Bank
  • Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP)
  • Landbank of the Philippines
  • Philippine National Bank (PNB)
  • PSBank
  • Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC)
  • Security Bank
  • UnionBank

In filing for a claim, there are SSS Disability Benefit requirements that must be submitted.
