“Wage Subsidy” To Be Given to Some SSS & BIR Members Amid Crisis Due to COVID-19

SSS & BIR MEMBERS – Some of the members of the Social Security System and the Bureau of Internal Revenue taxpayers may receive a “wage subsidy” amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Since the early stage of the fight against the spread of coronavirus in the Philippines, the national government placed Metro Manila under a community quarantine. Shortly, it was upgraded to an enhanced community quarantine and was extended to the entire Luzon.

Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte also announced a state of calamity covering the whole country. The local government units were given permission to use some funds in helping their constituents.

Several provinces in Mindanao and Visayas also implement the ECQ. Amid the implementation, the movement of the people are limited and many businesses stopped their operation.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis wherein a lot of people can’t report to work, the Department of Finance (DOF) set a “wage subsidy” program for some employees of some businesses. The target recipients are the low to medium or middle class employees.

According to DOF, those who may receive the “wage subsidy” are the SSS and BIR members and taxpayers. The subsidy may range from Php 5,000.00 to Php 8,000.00.

The said subsidy is good for two (2) months and the target recipients are the workers of some 1.6 million small businesses affected by the quarantine.

The DOF “wage subsidy” may benefit 2.6 million SSS and BIR members and taxpayers and 800,000 workers who are not totally compliant to SSS and BIR. A total of P50.8 billion is allocated for it according to DOF.

With regards to the eligibility criteria and the mechanics for the wage subsidy program, according to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, it will be announced this week.
